Golf Croquet CroqCan 2010 - Toronto Cricket, Skating, and Curling Club - June 10 - 13
Golf CroqCan 2010, the Canadian Open Golf Croquet Championships, opened on Thursday, June 10 with a reception under the cricket canopy of the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. General Manager Doug Knights welcomed the 27 players comprising members and guests from Quebec City, Ottawa, Pennsylvania, Sarnia and St. Catharines.
The Jazz Trio provided music from the clubhouse balcony above as the partiers partied and the courts were kept busy with participants practicing and Thursday evening club regulars chalking up series points.
Block play began on Friday. Thank you to our scheduler, Paul Emmett, for accommodating the numerous requests from working participants for delayed start times. One player had her first match at 7:00 pm (the last shall come first?).
Saturday saw the continuation of block play and the beginning of rain. While the rain dampened the courts, it did little harm to the spirits, and the schedules remained intact.
In the evening, players retired to the second floor lounge for the annual silent auction. A thank you to the local merchants and players for their generous donations. Club president Barbara Jones was able to join us and expressed appreciation on behalf of the Board of Directors for the privilege of hosting this event.
We were most fortunate that Ben Lowry had the foresight to bring his guitar along from Pennsylvania. While he claimed it was not his best guitar, his strings and vocals were greatly appreciated by all in attendance and the passers-by. Thank you, Ben!
Dinner guests had a choice of pan-roasted filet of Lake Huron pickerel or fire-grilled Spring Creek flat iron steak. This, along with the passion fruit crepe dessert, softened everyone up for a final round at the silent auction. We are happy to say that the auction kept us out of a deficit finish.
Sunday saw the completion of block play for the 2nd Flight Doubles and playoffs for the three singles flights.
The four 2nd Flight Doubles teams played a double round robin without playoffs. Gayle Fortnum and Setsuko Stefanou finished in first place, having lost only one match. Their nemesis in attaining a sweep was the team of Bill Hall and new-to-croquet-this-year Carol Herling.
The 2nd Flight Singles block consisted of five players, and resulted in three players with three wins each and a circular head-to-head. Based on net points, the semi-final set-up was Paul Cook vs Shan Cauvery and Stephanie Smyth vs Alec Bollini. These results were eagerly awaited by spectators and did indeed result in a husband and wife final between Stephanie and Paul. This was obviously Stephanie’s year, (the last to play did come first!).
The 1st Flight Singles block of six, resulted in Christian Paquet and Ben Lowry with four wins and Christian with the head-to-head advantage. The semi-finals saw Christian vs Georg Dej and Ben vs Dan Maguire. The finalists were Ben against Georg. The strain was showing when it took them 20 minutes to score the first hoop in the second game which Ben won for the 1st Flight Championship.
The Open Flight Singles block of eight saw David Lyon undefeated with only one match going to the third game. The semi-finalists were David Lyon vs Jane Beharriell and Paul Emmett vs David Druiett. David Lyon continued his 2-game winning streak through the semi-final and the final against Paul. .
This is the first departure of the Canadian Open Golf Croquet Championship from Canada, having previously been won twice by Leo McBride and once by Paul Emmett.
Prizes were framed pictures of Sally Ross Hynes’ latest croquet artwork, depicting the Homer Winslow croquet scene, set in the new lobby of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
